Tip #2 - Looking Behind Walls
This is probably obvious but I didn't think of it until I had my eyeball and flashlight sharing a small hole I cut in the wall to see if there were pipes or wires behind the wall. I wanted to put in a deep built-in medicine cabinet.
I made the hole big enough to put my digital camera through it and snap pictures from all directions. I almost dropped the camera when I was trying to press the button with one of my fingers. (there wasn't room to use the other hand.) Put the strap around your wrist or you may be tearing down the whole wall to retrieve it.
Anyway, after reviewing the pictures I could see I had nothing in the way at all so I was able to cut out the area to the size of the medicine cabinet and then build it according to the space available. I made mine 24 inches high by 12 inches wide by 8 inches deep. Now we have a his and hers mirrored built-in medicine cabinets. I love it!

Hey! I have a question about something you did on your house. I see you added a deck to the back, and the one picture (location - http://www.eriesargonaut.net/Backyardwebsm.jpg) looks exactly like the back of my house, as we have an addition (mudroom type thing.). Anyways, there seems to be a gas meter or something on the right side, and in this picture (http://www.eriesargonaut.net/back_of_house.jpg) I don't see that gas meter anymore.
We currently have an air conditioning unit outside in the same spot that gas meter was in your picture. Some day I want to either put a sliding glass door or regular door there, along with a deck, and I was wondering what you did about that gas meter. Do you think it's possible to just put the deck over it? Any advice is appreciated!
By the way, our house was built in 1900 (25th between Raspberry and Cranberry area) with alot of updates, but that plaster is a pain in the butt!
